3 Scripture Verses to Help You Sleep 2

Since I was a little girl, I suffered from what I called “the Zimmerman sleep curse”. This was the 2 or 3 AM wake-up call that my body sounded on many nights. I attributed it to genetics since several of my dad’s family members have similar sleep patterns. I know now that there are a few physical issues that contribute to this, but more on that later.

When I was young, I would lie awake for 30 to 40 minutes but as I got older it stretched to 2 hours or more. The worst were nights when I would wake up at 3:30 or 4 AM and lie awake until just before my alarm went off at 6. Those were tough days! Over the years, I tried many of the suggestions for sleeplessness, but they didn’t work for me. Often it just prolonged my wakefulness.

Essential oils like RutaVaLa, Vetiver, and Tranquil as well as supplements to support my thyroid, adrenals, hormone levels, and digestive system have helped immensely! These days, I don’t have nearly as many nights when I wake up and can’t fall back to sleep.  I’ve also discovered that going for a brisk walk in the early afternoon has proven beneficial to my sleep.

But every so often I find myself awake at 3 AM, and what I’m discovering is that praying Scripture over my sleep makes it less frustrating to be awake. Talking to the Shepherd instead of counting sheep! I also think it helps to calm my brain which helps me fall back to sleep faster.

So here are my top 3 Scripture verses to pray when sleep is elusive.

Psalm 3:3-5  But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and He answered me from His holy hill. I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.

Psalm 4:8  In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 121:3-5  He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that the Lord keeps us safe and gives us peaceful sleep? And while we may be struggling to sleep, our God never sleeps, He is always watching over us. May the Lord bless your sleep tonight!
